At Bogaerts International School North Campus, we believe in fostering creativity and self-expression across all levels of education, from our youngest learners to our Diploma Programme (DP) students. Recently, we embarked on a vibrant art project that allowed students from Early Years to DP to engage with the concept of colour and its emotional expression, culminating in a stunning collaborative art installation.

Target & Purpose: The objective of this activity was to unite the entire student body in a meaningful and creative project, demonstrating how art can express both individuality and community. The idea behind this project was to explore the personal significance of colour while simultaneously creating a collective artwork that symbolises the diversity and unity within our school community.

The Process: The project began with a discussion on the meaning and emotional expression of colours. Students explored how each colour can evoke different feelings and convey unique messages. After this, students were invited to reflect on a colour that best represents their family. Student were provided with a circle, which they then coloured to symbolise their chosen family colour.

Once the circles were completed, Our DP Visual Arts students and I collaborated to install the circles on the large wall of our school. But before that, they inquired into the concept of art installations—how they can transform a space and engage an entire community. The DP students then thoughtfully arranged the circles in a dynamic wave-like pattern. This colourful wave represented the energy and vibrancy of our diverse school community, with each circle contributing its own unique hue to the larger whole.

The Idea Behind It: I designed this collaborative art installation to highlight both individual and collective identity. Each colored circle represents a family’s distinct identity, yet together they form a unified and visually stunning artwork. The wave-like arrangement symbolizes the flow and connection between each student and their family, reflecting the fluid and interconnected nature of our school community.

By engaging students from various age groups, the project not only encouraged personal reflection but also promoted teamwork and the idea that art can bring people together. It was a beautiful reminder that, despite our differences, we are all part of something bigger, contributing to a collective whole that is both diverse and unified.

The installation now stands as a testament to the creativity and unity of our students, offering a daily reminder of the power of art to connect and inspire.
